Jacob Hoagland Raines, 34, Los Osos resident and Paso Robles winemaker, died Friday, Aug. 20, 2010.
Born in San Jose, Costa Rica, Jacob was the son of Kate Dubost and Jon Raines, and the stepson of Curt Dubost. A 1994 graduate of Templeton High School, he attended Cuesta College and Cal Poly before embarking upon a career in winemaking.
In 2003, after gaining experience at wineries such as Wild Horse, Dover Canyon, Starr Ranch and Peachy Canyon, Jacob became the winemaker and vineyard manager at his family-owned Dubost Winery in Paso Robles. Beyond great wine, his many passions included painting, surfing, tending his grapes, spending time with his love, Serena Cyr, his many friends and two dogs, Oso and Chachi.
In addition to his parents, Jacob is survived by two brothers Lucas and Zachary (Vanessa and nephew, Cameron and niece, Kali); two step-brothers Ted Dubost (Sarah and nephew, Raymond) and Tim Dubost (Colleen and nephew, Davis and niece, Dylan); and two half-brothers Jon and Jason Raines.
A memorial Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Friday, Aug. 27, 2010, at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church, 820 Creston Road in Paso Robles. Friends and family are invited to gather following Mass with a special celebration of Jacob’s life at 3 p.m. at Dubost Winery, 9988 Chimney Rock Road in Paso Robles.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial donations be made to the Surfrider Foundation, a non-profit organization dedicated to the protection and enjoyment of our world’s oceans, waves and beaches, at www.surfrider.org.
